We left Tok Alaska this morning heading for Chicken Alaska! We didn’t flip a coin but almost we couldn't decide if we wanted to go that way. I am glad we did, it was interesting. Now we can say we did the highway. Everyone we talked to either said it was better than coming up from Haines Junction which we did 10 days ago. A lot of construction on the Alaskan Highway the last 250 miles of rough wash board roads! Some said they would never drive Taylor Highway or Top of World Highway again! Gravel, hair pin curves, narrow, and at least 160 miles! It is exactly that, dirt, narrow, hair pin curves, steep inclines and declines washboard surfaces chuck holes! The motor home got a work out! Up and down those steep inclines! The road is closed as soon as snow arrives. Our first stop was Chicken Alaska. Pretty cool town. Like the population in the summer is 21 and 6 people stay for the winter! They boast that they are the last of the old frontier towns in Alaska.
We came into Dawson City, Yukon, this is the only way from Tok. Dawson City is a pretty big city. The population is 1,900. Some things that are interesting: There are 20 ½ hrs of daylight June 21, December 21 3.8 hrs of daylight! Dawson was a pretty busy place back in gold prospector days!
The Top of the World road stops at the Yukon River. There is ferry that runs people back and forth, and the Canadian Gov't pays for the ferry. There is no charge to go across on the ferry! The boat can carry 4 cars, maybe 4 cars and a motor home. It was pretty interesting.
Tonight we went downtown and had dinner. We stopped in at Diamond Tooth Gerties watch the can can girls do their show. It was fun.
Dawson City is a real authentic tourist trap! Wood side walks, old building, dirt roads. It is a pretty cool city! Wouldn't want to live here!
