The first 300 Miles on the Alaskan Hwy

June 14, 2008
We left Dawson Creek after we got the oil changed in the Bounder. Cost $70.00 but was worth it!
We went into an IGA store, it looked like they were either setting up or taking down! So I asked a person and he said they were closing! They are a product of the big box store down the street, called Walmart. I don’t really like Walmarts in Canada. They are really junky. I think the economy and gas prices are hurting Canada with the traveling industry.
We traveled Highway 97 North (Alaskan Highway) today expericing some hilly and steep grades, Carl did a great job! I didn’t really like a couple of the grades, but we made it down without a problem.
Our first pictures are of Kiskatinaw River Bridge. It was built to replace the original structure on old Alaska Highway. You can cross the original bridge, which is the only bridge built along the Alaska Highway that is still in use today. We didn’t do that, maybe on the way home we will do it. We talked with some people from Alaska that took the loop, they said it was really fun.
We had a steep descent which was 4 miles long with 6-10 percent grade. Coming down the hill you could see Peace River Bridge in front of you. It was quite a ride! Peace River Bridge is in the town of Taylor, BC. Taylor population is 1300 people. Taylor is an industrial community centered around a Duke Energy Inc. gas processing plant and lumber mill. Quite interesting.
The road is hilly and smooth. We had a couple places that were graveled, quite a few frost heaves. Things got moved around in the coach from going over the little bumps in the road. Overall, the road is pretty smooth.
Fort St. John was on the map. Pretty large community. They are also producers of oil and gas. What the heck, why is gas so expensive? There seems to be a lot of producers around here and US!
We continued onward and experienced some more steep grades. The Milepost that I ordered last year is so cool. It has mile markers in it and tells you what is at marker.
We ate lunch in the motor home (chicken salad) at Pink Mountain. It was raining, and the Pink Mountain couldn’t be found!
We were driving along we saw 2 deer ?? They had some big ears! Really dark in color.
We came across 2 bears meandering along the road! Couldn't stop to take pictures! Maybe tomorrow we will see more.
Tonight we are in Fort Nelson. Population of 7,200 in the area. Another thriving town, with gas exploration.
Twilight continues through the night, it never gets real dark here in the summer time.
We will say good night now, and plan tomorrows day.

Something else you can do under customize is add your "Picasa" photo album. It would house all of your pictures from the trip. If you want to check one out, go to my blog. Have a great time!!! Looks like fun.
